Montana building techniques

Within each type of structure Biggerstaff has the flexibility to work within a variety of building techniques -such as timber frame, ordinary stick frame, panel systems, and steel post. Also considered in each project are any special guidelines that pertain to either the Montana climate and/or a client's desire to incorporate sustainable practices.
STICK FRAME
Stick frame construction, also referred to as "light frame construction," is one of the original building methods and is the most common among homes in the U.S. Stick framing is also one of the most economical building styles and, if it's built right, it's also one of the most reliable. In order to incorporate sustainable building methods reclaimed lumber can be used.
TIMBER FRAME
A popular method in Southwest Montana because of its efficiency, timber frame structures are based on framed panel walls consisting of heavy timber joined with pegged mortise and tenon joints. Many choose to incorporate reclaimed timber into these homes, which lend a more rustic look and feel.
PANEL SYSTEM
This building method is relatively new, incorporating walls, or panels known as Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), that are typically built and insulated off site and are made from a variety of materials. Upon delivery, the panels are put together much like a puzzle, erected to supported posts made of lightweight lumber and attached to studs.
STEEL
Steel is fast becoming the structural material favored for many consumers because it is solid, versatile and cost effective. These buildings have their structure built from pre-engineered steel, which is simple and quick construction. Steel buildings have become very popular, not only in farming and ranching, but also for business and commercial buildings and personal shop and storage spaces.
CUSTOM HYBRID
Hybrid buildings are very common due to size, efficiency and design, and several techniques can be combined for increased building efficiency or unique artistic effect. An example is to combine a timber framing technique with Structural Insulated Panels (SIP); these timbers form the structural posts for the SIPs to tie into, while giving the half timbered style appearance. Steel framing and structural members are often included in stick frame or timber frame building to offer appropriate strength for large spans, weights, etc. New solutions to common problems have now evolved from such creative combinations, taking advantage of the best qualities of each system.
